Port of Bilbao inaugurates green hybrid RTG cranes

Representatives linked to the Port of Bilbao and its hinterland have taken part in the inauguration ceremony of the six new eco-efficient hybrid RTG cranes acquired by CSP Iberian Bilbao Terminal.

According to the terminal, the new equipment can cut fossil fuel usage by 40 per cent while representing a big step forward in terms of energy efficiency and environmental preservation.

These new cranes will also contribute to an improvement in worker safety and productivity, as well as the optimisation of operations on ships, trucks, and trains, all of which is a strong indication of CSP Iberian Bilbao Terminal’s dedication to intermodality.

This acquisition is part of the company’s investment plan, which has earmarked more than €34.5 million ($37.8 million) over the last eight years for facility modernisation and machinery upgrades.

The event was attended by Ricardo Barkala, President of the Port Authority of Bilbao, Ken Chan, CEO of CSP Spain, and Elvira Gallego, General Manager of the Terminal, as well as Arantxa Tapia, Regional Minister for Economic Development, Sustainability, and the Environment.

In July, the Port of Bilbao reported a 3 per cent increase in container throughput over the first six months of the year compared to the year prior.

More recently, the Ports of Bilbao, Amsterdam and duisport signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the development of an intra-European corridor for renewable hydrogen connecting end-to-end Spain, The Netherlands and Germany.
